Delta Chapter's Dionne Muhammad
Busy in the Chicago Community
Soror Shows Broad Diversity in Her Interests and Actions
Delta Chapter Soror Dionne Muhammad, JD
Delta Chapter Soror Dionne Muhammad keeps herself busy as she serves the greater Chicago area by working in the Muslim, non-Muslim, and interfaith communities. Soror Dionne is president of the Delta Chapter which is based in the Chicago metro area.
Soror Dionne recently joined in the efforts of the Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. On June 19, 2008, Soror Dionne attended the Stop the Violence rally at the Thompson State Building to bring attention to the issue of violence in the community and to advocate for tougher gun laws in the wake of the killing of three more Chicago youth who had been slain earlier that week. Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church has been organizing and leading these rallies. Soror Dionne, who coordinates the Ministry of Justice for her mosque, joined Father Pfleger and the St. Sabina Parish in an interfaith partnership to promote justice and end violence in the Chicago community.
Soror Dionne has also been volunteering at Muhammad University of Islam in Chicago, instructing the debate class since December 2007. A lawyer by trade, Soror Dionne says that she determined that she would use her skills in advocacy to help sharpen the critical thinking, research, and written and verbal communication skills of these students. The course, entitled "Argumentation and Advocacy: How to Argue in the Best Manner," is open to all 6-9th grade students at the University. The course culminated in a "Great Debate" of sorts that took place earlier in June in conjunction with the Muhammad University of Islam Open House.
Since January 2008, Soror Dionne has been teaching a course on Islamic Law to the sisters at her local mosque.
