Beta Chapter Soror Kesha Abdul-Mateen and
Gamma Legacy Amirah Help Feed the HungryBy Kesha Abdul-Mateen
Beta Chapter Secretary & Publicity Chair
Amirah and I (in the name of Gamma) went to help out the Dinner Program For Homeless Women in Washington, DC to start Ramadan off RIGHT on Sept 1.
We sorted bread, handed out snacks, and served food to about 60 homeless women. We worked hard on our day off.
I took Amirah because she loves to help and I wanted her to understand that we as Muslims must help out our fellow humans, regardless of faith. A woman in need is a women in need. She kept asking me when we'd go back, and insha'allah we will be back. For those interested in volunteering with the dinner program for homeless women please see the website: www.dphw.org They need the most help on Thursday nights - buffet night. They feed about 100 women and children on this night and always have at most four volunteers.
Community service is a pillar of our sorority.I feel that a way to get our "name out there" is not just in fashion shows and fundraisers but by filling a void when one is created. Whether it's the dinner program, Project Downtown, working with Muslimat al Nissa or helping your neighbor with her/his groceries, there is a lot that we can do in our communities.
Community service humbles the soul and makes us so greatful for what we have. I saw all types of women there: black/white/Asian, young and old. It's sad to see the sad state of some women in a progressive country.
The media are loud with the fact that 3rd world countries "throw away women," but so do we.We can all either just make dua or get in and make a difference.
I was truly moved buy the experience and will be back, insha'allah.
